Repositioning Cruises
These often take place at the end of the cruise season in one particular destination and mostly occur in the months of March, April and May and again in October and November.
Typical examples of this is transatlantic repostitioning cruises at the end and beginning of the Caribbean and Mediterranean seaon. Other examples are transpactic from Alaska to Australia or Asia and Panama Canal itineries from the Caribbean to Alaska.
Benefitits of these cruieses is that the oftern come at a much lower price than you would pay for a normal cruise on the ship. There are numerous sea days allowing you to relax and enjoy the ship as well as being less crowded. Another great benefit is that you often get to experience two continents and can add pre and post cruise stays to your trip.
One way destination cruises
One way destination cruises occur in a certain region during specific times of the year. Mediterranean one way itineraries are extemely popular and allow you to commence your journey in one historical city and end in another. Popular ports in which you can take a one way Mediterranean cruise are Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Ravenna, Trieste, Istanbul and Lisbon.

Alaska
One way cruises offers a unique opportunity to spend time pre and post cruise in two fascinating ports with some cruise lines also offering land tours pre and post cruise.
Popular ports in the region are Vancouver (British Colombia, Canada), Seattle (Washington), Seward (Alaska) and Whittier (Alaska). Land tours pre and post cruise can also start from Fairbanks or Whittier in Alaska.
The cruise season typically runs between May and September with ships from the major cruise lines such as Celebrity, Holland America Line, Princess Cruise and Royal Caribbean, positioning from Los Angeles, Asia, Australia and from the Caribbean which includes transit through the Panama Canal.
Asia
Singapore is one of the most popular ports in Asia for beginning or ending your cruise in Asia with one way voyages to the Benoa (Bali), Hong Kong or Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan.
Hong Kong, Seoul (Incheon), Tokyo and Yokohama also offer one way cruises through Asia.
Cruise lines also repositioning their ships to and from regions such as Alaska and Australia as well World Cruises offering smaller segment voyages to and from Asia.
Australia and New Zealand
Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland are the most popular ports to take one way cruises as well as repositioning crusies at the end of the season.
Repositioning cruises most often sail across the Pacific to Hawaii to California or Alaska.
Caribbean/Europe Transatlantic
With the Caribbean islands being a popular destination during the winter months, cruises lines such as P&O, MSC and Marella reposition some of their ships to the Caribbean during October and November.
Once the season has finished, these ships will most often reposting back to Europe to ports such as Southampton, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca
Europe/Florida Transatlantic
Many of the major cruise lines reposition some of their fleet from the ports of Miami. Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe during the spring.
Embarkations ports during the summer months include Barcelona, Rome, Athens, and Ravenna in the Mediterranean and Southampton, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Reykjavik in Northern Europe
Europe/South America Transatlantic
During the winter months, cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Celebrity Cruise Line and Princess Cruises reposition some of their ships from Europe to South America to sail itineraries from ports in Brazil such as Santos and Rio de Janeiro as well as Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The ships then sail one way Transatlantic voyages back to Europe during the spring for the ships to spend the summer season in Europe sailing from the Mediterranean or Northern Europe.
Mediterranean
Popular cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess and Royal Caribbean sail in the Mediterranean with one way itineraries available throughout the summer. Popular starting or ending ports include Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Ravenna, Lisbon, Trieste and Istanbul.
Northern Europe
Some cruise lines offer one way cruises from ports in Northern Europe. Norwegian Cruise Line has one way itineraries throughout the summer from Southampton (United Kingdom) to Reykjavik (Iceland). This is a great way for travellers to visit both the UK and Iceland pre/post cruise.
Other one way itineraries start from ports in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Oslo and Stockholm.
North Transatlantic
The most famous north transatlantic route is between Southampton (UK) and New York (USA) and Cunarld Line sails this on a regular basis. This is a great way to spend time in New York or London pre/post cruise and you can sail in either direction.
Other North Transatlantic ports include Boston, Quebec, Reykjavik, Le Havre and Hamburg
Transpacific
Transpacific cruises often take in the South Pacific and are generally repositioning cruises from Alaska and California to Australia and New Zealand via Hawaii.
Other transpacific cruises take the northern route between Alaska and Japan.
World Cruise
Although World Cruises are usually round trip sailings lasting between three and four months, many of the ships on will have shorter segments which is great for those who do not have time or would like to have a taster of what a World Cruise entails before committing to the full voyage.
Segments of a World cruise can be a few weeks to a month or more in duration, and often involve sailing between two or three continents. Most world cruises depart in the month of January and end in March or April, with the segments taking place any time within this time frame.
